Yangshan deepwater port  is located in Shengsi island chain , Zhejiang province, which consists of dozens of islands and it is also the first harbour built on the island.

The deepwater port is 32 kilometers away from Luchao Harbour of Shanghai on the northwest, 90 kilometers away from Beilun Harbour of Ningbo to the south and only 45 kilometers away from the international voyage, which is the nearest deepwater port to Shanghai.

At present, the construction of the main part of north port of the deepwater harbour has been completed and the third phase project of Yangshan deepwater Harbour has just been put into use, which consists of seven berths for ships of 70000 dwt to 100000 dwt with 2600 meters of quay line and 5 million standard containers of the annual cargo handling capacity. When the third phase construction was finished, there has had 16 special berths for containers in the deepwater harbour , and the annual cargo handling capacity reached 9.3 million standard containers.

The deepwater harbour has gained great economic and social benefits . The container throughput of Shanghai Harbour ranked the second in the world in 2007 as well as in 2008. By 2020, there will have over 50 berths for containers in Yangshan Harbour, and the annual cargo handling capacity will reache 15 million standard containers.(Hangzhou Daily)
