Health Undertakings
The ability of public health and basic medical services further improved. By the end of 2008, there were altogether 2,544 medical treatment institutions of various kinds, including 141 hospitals and 15 disease prevention and control centers disease prevention and control centers. There were 52,000 health workers in the city, including 21,000 practicing (assistant) doctors and 19,000 registered nurses. The number of hospital beds owned by Hangzhou reached 38,000. The network of community health service covered all urban area. By the end of the year, there were 102 community health service centers and 739 community health service spots established in Hangzhou. The emergency ability of public health system was improved further. There were 43 medical organizations above -level setting up emergency rescue teams and a total of 38 emergency rescue centers were established. The mortality rate of newborns and that of children below 5 year age dropped from 4.56 per mill and 6.44 per mill of the previous year to 4.43 per mill and 6.20 per mill respectively.
